As the winner of the 2006 Pritzker Award, 2016 Venice Biennale of Architecture Golden Lion and the 2017 RIBA Gold Medal, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is the most recognized living Brazilian architect in the world today. Therefore, it was perfectly natural that the UIA2020Rio Organizing Committee should invite him to preside its honorary committee, which gathers outstanding culture and architecture names. And he accepted!
The Brazilian Institute of Architects national chairperson, Nivaldo Andrade, invited Rocha at a visit to his office in São Paulo. The architect said he felt honored to take part in the event and flattered to see his trajectory being recognized by peers.
- Rocha is the most important Brazilian architect today. It is paramount for us to have his participation and collaboration at the World Congress - says Andrade.
Sergio Magalhaes, UIA2020RIO Executive Committee Chairperson, highlighted the importance of the architect’s trajectory, as he is an icon of the Paulista School of Architecture, a movement led by Vilanova Artigas during the second half of the 20th century.
- Rocha produces an architecture that teaches us how to think about space, as shown on each of his works throughout his vast experience. His signature is sensitivity, technological radical thinking and deep political coherence.
UIA2020Rio Honorary Committee gathers names from culture and architecture who can bring relevant contribution to the issues to be debated at the 2020 event. Besides Paulo Mendes da Rocha, other members of the committee are: Jaime Lerner, architect - the only Brazilian chairperson of UIA ever; singer and former Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil - who 40 years ago started the debate about the favelas through the hit Refavelas; and Marisa Moreira Salles - specialized architecture editor and founder of the Arq.Futuro event and portal, which bring important debates on urban planning and cities. Other members are yet to be announced.
